“Self-uncontained” :

Self: it self / my self / our selves / them selves / her self / him self

Some of the aspects in current urban cultures have been leading to the fragmentation of the “identity”. The word “identity” itself is actually somewhat insufficient to describe ‘self’ because of its singular rhetorical connotation. Conventionally, ‘self’ was identified with elements such as one’s regionality, sex and body.

Those common descriptions of identity, -the sort of things that are usually asked by strangers on their first encounter,- have become irrelevant or non-descriptive when one tries to see ‘self’. When one tries to see “self”, past and present, intimacy and limitation, “self” and “others” start to raise complexities.

In my work, an exploration of a conduit between fragments of “self” and a space where can be only created by this curious state are depicted.

In reciprocity I and II, using two coloured light sources projected on my body with the aim of producing predictable colour tones but, more importantly an unpredictable third colour, a space that could not be revealed otherwise.

In crossover, a train journey from Richmond to Upminter in London was cut in sequences and edited together with clips of a return journey from Upminster to Richmond.

In unbroken promises, my beloved friends and family were asked to repeat a same sentence that is at once real and impossible. Analysing each fragment is somewhat inappropriate, especially when examining one’s self.

However, exploring different kinds of communication between those fragments seems to provide more clues in understanding ‘self’ and appears to be at our closest reach.
